“Northanger Abbey” opens 6pm Sunday October 6

Nash Theatre presents “Northanger Abbey”, the second production in the “Month of Sundays”’ series.

An entirely new play, by well known Brisbane theatre critic, director and playwright Nigel Munro-Wallis, and based on Jane Austen’s novel of that name, “Northanger Abbey”  is a dark but comic tale of manners which takes a rather light-hearted look at the Gothic genre so popular in both Austen’s time and our own.

Austen’s heroine, Catherine is addicted to Gothic novels but soon discovers that one cannot live one’s life as if in a Gothic novel, filled with danger and intrigue. Indeed danger lies in the belief that life is the same as fiction for things are not always what they seem at first.

“Northanger Abbey” audition: Sunday, 11 August

Required: 5 women and 3 men; ages early-20s upwards. No upper age limit.

Northanger Abbey” is a new adaptation by Nigel Munro-Wallis of Jane Austen’s well-known novel of the same title. Austen is well-known for her exploration of the manners and social mores of her time and Northanger Abbey is a wonderful example of this. The novel is, however, also well-known as Austen’s humorous take on the Gothic novel, so popular in the nineteenth century, and full of her characteristic wit and keen observations.

This new adaptation will be staged as part of Nash’s “Month of Sundays” program, during October.

All interested actors should prepare a two minute monologue and be prepared to undertake a cold read of extracts from the play.

When: Auditions will be held from 1pm on August 11, 2013
Where: In The Play Shed (next to the car park behind Merthyr Road Uniting Church, 52 Merthyr Road, New Farm, access via Amity St.)
